UND's Department of Psychology will be hosting the Northern Lights Psychology Conference on Saturday 20 in the Memorial Union. 2007's keynote speaker will be James Flynn from the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The Professor Emiritus is known for his documentation of the massive IQ gains between two generations that has since been known as the Flynn effect. The American Psychological Association has devoted a symposium and a book based upon his research, and the International Society for Intelligence Research has honored Flynn with the status of Distinguished Scientist of 2007.

His most recent book entitled "What Is Intelligence?" will be the subject of his lecture.

Jeff Weatherly, chair of the Psychology Department, says that the event will be a good learning experience for everyone in the community.

"The event will be attended by UND students, high school students, and college students from other universities," he said. "The conference will help UND psychology students in their professional careers as well as in their entrance into the graduate program."

October 5th marked the deadline for submission of research by students, faculty, and institutional researchers, and information about the event such as a schedule of sessions can be found on the Psychology Department's website at http://ndwild.psych.und.nodak.edu/dept/.

"The conference should bring in good speakers that people in the area may not be able to see otherwise," added Weatherley. "The featured keynote speaker is widely known in psychology and is actually the featured author in the upcoming issue of Scientific American."

The event, which is held on the second floor of the Union in the hallway and Lecture Bowl, is open and free to students. Weatherly concluded, "Students should stop by; they might find something of interest."

The conference has drawn top-notch speakers from the field of psychology in the past, including famed Stanford University Professor Philip Zimbardo.
